Power to Get the Job Done

He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” – Acts 1:3-8

Wouldn’t you have liked to have been with them during the forty days Jesus talked to them about the kingdom? Even while they were being instructed by the risen Christ the disciples still did not have a full understanding of the kingdom. In fact, when Jesus told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Father they thought this would be the time Israel would be restored and he would be king.

Jesus responded by staying on point. He was not sidetracked with the issue they were raising. His purpose was to convince them that they must stay in Jerusalem until they were filled with the promise the Father had given. The future of the kingdom depended upon them staying in Jerusalem until they were baptized with the Holy Spirit.

He had already told them they would be witnesses to his ministry and purposes, but now he was telling them that they would be given supernatural power that would give evidence to the world that Jesus was the Christ and that salvation comes through faith in him. On the day of Pentecost he gave his followers this power and he calls men and women today to stay at their Jerusalem until they are filled with that power.

Prayer: Lord, grant me a baptism of Holy Spirit to witness with Holy Spirit power and grace. In Jesus name. Amen.

Principle: Jesus had already told the disciples they would be witnesses to his ministry and purposes, but now he was telling them that they would be given supernatural power which would give evidence to the world that Jesus was the Christ and that salvation comes through faith in him.

Affirmation: Jesus promised supernatural power to those who would seek the Father for the baptism of Holy Spirit. I have received the Holy Spirit and I have access to his power.

Reflection: This series of devotions on the life and teachings of Jesus, the Christ, concludes with this devotion which speaks of power to complete the job of spreading the gospel around the world. It is critical for those of us who follow Christ to have this power. Do you have it?

Luke’s Record of His Last Message

Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”    – Luke 24:45-49

Finally, he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. The disciples were much like anyone else of that day; in fact, they were very much like people today. They believed what they saw, questioned what they heard, and understood through a mind influenced by tradition and experience.

It is after the resurrection and Jesus is giving them their last instructions. They were beginning to understand and to believe that all he told them was going to come to pass. Now he is opening their understanding to the purpose of their call: They would be preaching the forgiveness of sins through faith in the name of Jesus and this ministry would begin in Jerusalem.

These followers of Jesus were about to enter new territory. They had been sent out earlier to proclaim the kingdom of God, but at that time they thought they were heralding Jesus as the king and the king was about to set up his kingdom.

Bit by bit Jesus had been trying to introduce them to the true kingdom of God, but they had been slow to understand. Now he is opening their minds so they can understand. Isn’t that like most of us today? We see, we believe, but our belief is not complete; our understanding is not fully opened.

His command to them was that they would go to Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Father. They believed, but as yet they did not understand. When the promise of the Father came to them God's plan would be revealed to them.

Prayer: Father, help me walk in the truth you have revealed.

Principle: The final words of instruction to the disciples was that they were to go to Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Father. They believed, but as yet they did not understand. When the promise of the Father came to them God's plan would be revealed to them.

Affirmation: I have been to my Jerusalem and I have experienced the promise of the Father. I am now equipped and empowered to do the works of the kingdom.

Reflection: Jesus gave a list of signs and wonders which would accompany those who believed and who preached the good news of the kingdom. The record shows that the message was confirmed with those signs and miracles. Are there still signs and wonders happening today when the gospel is preached? Why do you think that is?

The Veil Was Torn When It Was Finished

With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. – Mark 15:37-38

With these last words of Jesus, “It is finished,” an era which began with Adam and Eve had finally come to an end. When man sinned in the garden he was separated from God and a wall of separation was erected.

God placed an angel with a flaming sword at the entrance to the garden to keep man from going back into the garden and partaking of the tree of life. Man was separated from God and from eternal life.

This separation was further emphasized when God had Moses make a veil which would separate the common people from the presence of the Lord. God did make an exception and that was the high priest was allowed beyond the veil to effect atonement for the sins of the people but the average person was not allowed there.

The altar in the temple represented the fatal price of sin and the veil represented the separation between God and man caused by sin. For millennia man had suffered the altar and the veil with no remedy in sight.

Then Jesus came preaching that the kingdom of God was with them, but they still had the altar and the veil. The sacrifice of animals could atone for their sin, but the veil kept them separated from the glory of God

Then it was finished. The final sacrifice for sin had been made – there was no more need for sacrifice. The veil was ripped and man was finally given access to the glory of God. With the sin issue resolved by the death of Christ there was no more need for the veil.

God has released his glory to all who will receive Christ.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the work of Calvary and the torn veil. Your grace has made the provision for my redemption.

Principle: The final sacrifice for sin had been made – there was no more need for sacrifice. The veil was ripped and man was finally given access to the glory of God. With the sin issue resolved by the death of Christ there was no more need for the veil.

Affirmation: Thank God for the torn veil. Now I have access directly to God and His Glory because of what Christ did for all who would follow him.

Reflection:  Since man was put out of the Garden of Eden he was separated from the life God originally intended for him. Even the temple separated man from God. But the death of Jesus, the Lamb of God, being sacrificed on the cross, tore down the wall of partition between God and man.

Father, Forgive Them

When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals – one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. – Luke 22:33-34

At no other time was the mission of Christ put to a greater test than when he hung upon the cross. After enduring a night of torture he was nailed to a cross between two common thieves. There, in extreme agony he cries out to the Father, “Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

In this moment of physical pain he remembered why he was there. He had earlier prayed, “If it is possible, let this cup pass from me, but, nevertheless, your will be done.” He had resigned himself to the mission for which he was sent to earth.

Paul would write of Christ, “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man he humbled himself, and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!” Philippians 3:6-8.

It was his mission to present his human body as a sacrifice for the sins of all of mankind, even for those who had tortured and crucified him. In the midst of his pain he cried, “Forgive them.”

When the soldiers mocked him saying, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself,” heaven and earth rocked with the echo, “Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

As they place a crown of thorns on his head heaven could still hear the words, “Forgive them.”

Centuries later when we reminded him of his wounds by the sin of our life and our rebellion against God heaven still reverberated with the echo of his words: “Forgive them.”

Prayer: Thank you Lord for showing the way to forgiveness even in the most trying times. Help me to learn that. Amen.

Father, Forgive Them

Principle: It was his mission to present his human body as a sacrifice for the sins of all of mankind, even for those who had tortured and crucified him. In the midst of his pain he cried, “Forgive them.”

Affirmation: I know that his suffering and death was for the sins of the world, and I am particularly aware of my own sin. I am among those he referred when he said, "Forgive them."

Reflection:  There is no other passage of Scripture which demonstrates the faithfulness of Jesus to his mission than the plea he made for those who crucified him, "Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

Jesus Finishes His Prayer

Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them. - John 17:24-26

It had been quite and evening. Jesus had performed the task of a servant  by washing the feet of the disciples. They had prepared to eat the meal and Jesus gave them the alarming news that one of them would betray him. He spoke of the blood, his blood, of the new covenant and his body that would be broken.

Finally he gave his last instructions before he would go to the cross. It was simply this: Do not fear because I will return to comfort you. I will not just be with you but I will be in you. You must love one another as I have loved you and great peace will be upon you.

Then he prayed to his Father. The entire 17th chapter of John is given to his prayer and we would all do well to read it occasionally so we don't forget his heart and his purposes for us. His desire was that we would be united in his love.

He says he has revealed the father to his followers (v6) and he prayed that they would get the message. Perhaps looking into the future he prayed that his followers would dwell in unity (v11). All of this could only happen if those who followed would continue in his love.

He concludes this prayer by sharing his desire that his love, the Father's love, which dwelt in him, would dwell in all believers, just as he would dwell in all believers.

His cry was that we would be one in love and purpose as he was one with the Father. Isn't it time for that to happen?

Prayer: Lord, help us to united as one in your love. Amen.

Principle: He concludes this prayer by sharing his desire that his love, the Father's love, which dwelt in him, would dwell in all believers, just as he would dwell in all believers. His cry was that we would be one in love and purpose as he was one with the Father.

Affirmation: I desire to be one with others who follow Christ. Not necessarily one in doctrine but one in purpose. May I be driven by the love of the Father to be in unity with the entire body of Christ.

Reflection: I have found it very easy to separate myself from those who are not just like me, but that is my weakness. How about you; do you find yourself pulling away from other Christ followers who are of another denomination, or who embrace some doctrines you don't agree with? How well do you fulfill the desire of Jesus that his entire body be in unity?

Father, Make Us One

My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.   – John 17:20-21

Is it possible that as Jesus was talking to the Father about those who would believe in him that he saw the future? Do you think that may have been the motivation for his prayer, “That all of them may be one?” If in fact he was looking into the future he saw a daunting task before him.

He had already seen his followers jockeying for position in the kingdom while he was ministering with them. He tried to teach them that the way of the kingdom was to serve one another rather than to rule over one another.

Somehow I don’t think the fragmented body of Christ we see today is what Jesus had in mind when he went to the cross. He may have had that in mind when he prophesied that brother would turn against brother.

It is significant that one of the burdens he was carrying to the cross was the knowledge that those who would claim faith in him would be as fragmented as we are today.

Here is a challenge I am throwing out today: Help the father bring unity to the body of Christ by consciously reaching out to a believer outside of the group you normally fellowship. You have neighbors, friends or co-workers who are believers but they are affiliated with a different group than you; invite them into your circle of fellowship and inquire about their circle of fellowship.

It is said that the most segregated hour of the week is at church on Sunday Morning. That is not just true about race but the church is segregated, or divided, by doctrine, denomination, and socio-economic status. The only way the body of Christ will be united is for you and I to take the initiative and reach across those lines of segregation and invite our brothers and sisters into our hearts. Pray about it.

Prayer: Lord, help me to seek unity in your body. Amen.

Principle: The only way the body of Christ will be united is for you and I to take the initiative and reach across those lines which divide us and invite our brothers and sisters into our hearts.

Affirmation: When I look at another follower of Christ I don't see denomination, ethnicity, doctrine, or socio-economic differences. I simply see another brother or sister in Christ.

Reflection:  What did Jesus have in mind when he prayed that his followers would be one? Was he talking about the way the church is today or did he have something else in mind? In what ways is the body of Christ not as one today?

Disciples From Another World

I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
                                                                                          – John 17:14-19

The problem many people of this world have with Christianity and Christians is that that they do not understand the concept of believers being in another world. They don’t understand the teachings of Jesus because they approach understanding from the perspective of this world, and this world belief system is diametrically opposed to kingdom belief.

The world teaches that we gain power by controlling and manipulating others; the kingdom of God teaches that we gain power by serving others. The world teaches to get all you can while you can; kingdom philosophy is give to all who have need. The world philosophy is that no one is looking out for you so you have to look out for yourself; Jesus taught that the Holy Spirit is always looking out for us.

It is because of the world belief system which puts self, self-will, self-realization, and all things “self” before others that they have a difficult time accepting the concept of surrendering to a power greater than self.

In this prayer Jesus is asking the Father to protect those he had called to kingdom service. He knew they would be treading on dangerous ground and they would need his strength and guidance to make it.

Just as Jesus came to the world with purpose, so we who are his body today must live with purpose. We must not only endure the world but we must bring the joy of the Lord to the world.

Prayer: Grant me the faith to put self aside, and the strength to minister hope to this world. In Jesus name I ask. Amen.

Principle: Just as Jesus came to the world with purpose, so we who are his body today must live with purpose. We must not only endure the world but we must bring the joy of the Lord to the world.

Affirmation: I know that I am in the world, but I am not of the world. I am sanctified, made holy, through faith in Christ and I have been sent to the world to show Christ to them.

Reflection: The people of this world see Christianity as just another religion. They do not consider the fact that true believers in Christ have been born into another world, another kingdom, the kingdom of God. What differences can you see between Christianity, the world, and other religions?

That They May Have the Full Measure of Joy

I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. – John 17:12

The purpose behind all that Jesus taught those who would follow him is stated in this prayer to his Father: “That they may have the full measure of my joy within them.”

All that Jesus taught about the life of faith in God and life in the kingdom was for this one purpose; that those who followed him would have a sense of fullness and great joy.

David wrote of this time in Psalm 16:11, “You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

Sometimes we become so consumed with trying to be  good and to be “spiritual” we forget that Jesus showed us the primary purpose of his ministry was to bring us great joy.

Let’s look at what Jesus said about Joy in these chapters of John which record of his last teaching before his crucifixion:

  • John 15:11 – I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
  • John 16:20-21 –You will grieve, but you grief will turn to joy.
  • John 16:22 – Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
  • John 16:24 – Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

Let us not miss the point. The focus of the entire ministry of Christ was to position believers so that the joy of the Lord would be manifest in them. David prophesied that there would be joy in the presence of the Lord. If we do not have the joy of the Lord then maybe we need to position ourselves so that we will be in his presence. The purpose of his commands and his instructions is so that our joy would be complete.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to always remember that there is joy in obedience. Grant me the grace to submit to you. Amen.

Principle:  The focus of the entire ministry of Christ was to position believers so that the joy of the Lord would be manifest in them. David prophesied that there would be joy in the presence of the Lord. If we do not have the joy of the Lord then maybe we need to position ourselves so that we will be in his presence. The purpose of his commands and his instructions is so that our joy would be complete.

Affirmation:  The joy that I have is the result of his abiding presence. I have learned that in his presence is fullness of joy.

Reflection:  There are many references to the joy of the Lord in Scripture, particularly in the Psalms. I encourage you to do a study of the joy of the Lord and reflect on the Scriptures which address the subject.

The Glorified Christ

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life; that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. – John 17:1-5

“Father, the time has come.” Those who heard this prayer had no idea of the impact this time would have on the world. The most significant event in the entire history of man was about to take place, and it had been on God’s calendar from the beginning. We can almost hear the passion in his voice as he cries, “Father, the time has come.”

Paul, in writing to the Ephesians spoke of this time when he wrote, “He chose us in him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight” (Ephesians 1:4). Peter spoke of this time in 1 Peter 1:20, “He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.”

What was this time that had come? It was the time when the Lamb of God would be sacrificed once and for all for all the sins of mankind. In Revelation 13:8 John wrote that he was the lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Hebrews 10 records, “Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”… And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (v9-10). Yes, the time had come and the final sacrifice for sin was about to be made. This divine sacrifice would be made once and its effect would be felt by all men of all time for all of eternity.

The result of the sacrifice of Christ is this: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more” (Hebrews 10:17).

Prayer:  Thank you father for that sacrifice of all sacrifices.

Principle: The time had come and the final sacrifice for sin was about to be made. This divine sacrifice would be made once and its effect would be felt by all men of all time for all of eternity.

Affirmation: I have embraced Christ, the Lamb of God, sacrificed for the sins of all mankind. Just as he was the lamb slain from the foundations of the world I have been chosen in him since before time.

Reflection: Some very powerful concepts are addressed in this devotion which merit some very serious consideration. First is the concept of Christ being the sacrificial lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Second is the concept that the sins of the entire world, for all time, were cleansed through the shedding of his blood. And finally; all who would become believers were chosen in Him from the foundation of the world. Think on these things.

Take Heart - I Have Overcome The World

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. – John 16:33

These verses conclude three chapters of instructions about what was about to take place. Finally the disciples were getting it. In fact they had just told him, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech” (v29)

It would only be a few more hours before he was taken and these would be his final words of instruction to them. He gave them a caution, a warning and a promise.

The caution is that they were to be aware of the work of the Holy Spirit and not suppress his work or hinder what he would do. Later the apostle Paul cautions us to not quench, or hinder, the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19).

The warning is that the world would hate them just as they had hated him. He warns them that if they will stay in the vine connected to him they would do well. He tells them that the world hates them because they have been born into another world and are no longer of this world.

Finally, he gives them a promise. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.” He cautioned and warned so that they would be prepared for the attacks which would come upon them. Jesus wanted them to remember that he had given them the Holy Spirit to comfort them.

Jesus was telling them that the way would not be easy, there would be much trouble along the way, but his peace would be with them and to always remember that he, the great example had overcome the world and they could to.

We face many trials and troubles in this life but we should take comfort from this passage remembering that because he lives in us we can endure all the world brings our way.

Prayer:  Help me to ever remember that I can endure every trial because you have overcome the world. In Jesus name. Amen.

Principle: Jesus told those who followed him their path would not be easy, there would be much trouble along the way, but his peace would be with them and to always remember that he, the great example, had overcome the world and they could to.

Affirmation: The path has not been easy, but it has been very rewarding and the peace of God accompanies me on the journey. Christ has overcome and Christ is in me, therefore, I too will overcome.

Reflection:  When Jesus was about to be taken and crucified he gave his disciples a caution, a warning and a promise. What were they and how were the disciples affected by them?
