Disciples From Another World
– John 17:14-19
The problem many people of this world have with Christianity and Christians is that that they do not understand the concept of believers being in another world. They don’t understand the teachings of Jesus because they approach understanding from the perspective of this world, and this world belief system is diametrically opposed to kingdom belief.
The world teaches that we gain power by controlling and manipulating others; the kingdom of God teaches that we gain power by serving others. The world teaches to get all you can while you can; kingdom philosophy is give to all who have need. The world philosophy is that no one is looking out for you so you have to look out for yourself; Jesus taught that the Holy Spirit is always looking out for us.
It is because of the world belief system which puts self, self-will, self-realization, and all things “self” before others that they have a difficult time accepting the concept of surrendering to a power greater than self.
In this prayer Jesus is asking the Father to protect those he had called to kingdom service. He knew they would be treading on dangerous ground and they would need his strength and guidance to make it.
Just as Jesus came to the world with purpose, so we who are his body today must live with purpose. We must not only endure the world but we must bring the joy of the Lord to the world.
Prayer: Grant me the faith to put self aside, and the strength to minister hope to this world. In Jesus name I ask. Amen.
Principle: Just as Jesus came to the world with purpose, so we who are his body today must live with purpose. We must not only endure the world but we must bring the joy of the Lord to the world.
Affirmation: I know that I am in the world, but I am not of the world. I am sanctified, made holy, through faith in Christ and I have been sent to the world to show Christ to them.
Reflection: The people of this world see Christianity as just another religion. They do not consider the fact that true believers in Christ have been born into another world, another kingdom, the kingdom of God. What differences can you see between Christianity, the world, and other religions?
