The Word of God Will Keep Your Heart

When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God… Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees… Otherwise… your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God. – Deuteronomy 8:10-14

Sometimes I think we have been cursed with blessings. I have a good friend, a brother in the Lord, who serves God well under pressure. When finances go bad and health goes south on him he is in church every time the doors are open, even if he has to drag himself in. But it is a different story when times are good.

It isn’t always the hard times that reveal our faith – it is often how we respond to the good times that our faith is demonstrated.

I remember a cartoon I saw in a religious publication many years ago. The first picture was a man watching the offering plate go by and he was saying, “I wish I had something to give.” The second picture was the same man with a fist full of money and he was saying, “If I give this to the church the pastor is liable to backslide and spend it on wrong things.”

I recently saw a program on TV that was showing how people have been affected by winning millions of dollars. Some of them handle it fine, but for others it destroys their life. Their blessing became their curse.

Have you been blessed with the blessing or has the blessing become a curse to you?

Prayer: Dear Jesus, give me the grace to accept the good and the bad with the same faith. And especially, when the good times come, help me to continue to be mindful of you. In Jesus name. Amen.

Message:  When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God… Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees… Otherwise… your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God.

Affirmation:  I am careful to be grateful to God for the blessings He gives lest I forget Him and my heart be drawn away.

Reflection:  I have heard it said that it is not what you have that affects your faith walk but rather your faith walk is affected by what has you. How must you guard your heart to keep from being drawn into trusting the blessing rather than trusting the one who blesses?

Hope For A Prosperous Future

As the rain and snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.  - Isaiah 55:10-11

The prophet uses water as an example of the fruitfulness of God’s word. Water is vital to the cycle of life, without it every living thing will die; with it, grass grows, trees bud and nourishment is made available for every living creature.

God’s word is vital to the life-cycle of the spirit. God gives His word, and His word becomes hope and life to all who will hear it with their heart. God says, “When I speak it is not just empty words – it is my desire being expressed and I will accomplish the purposes of my desire.”

God’s word is like water in that it is the hope being offered, even when the effects are not seen immediately. Water goes into the ground where the seed receives its life; the seed then begins to develop within itself; then at the right time the seed sprouts from the ground; and finally, in the right time there is a harvest.

Let God’s word settle into your heart and grow so that your faith will abound.

Prayer: Lord, I tend to get a little impatient with your word – I want its life to be evident NOW. Grant me the grace to wait in faith for it to take root and grow. In Jesus name, amen.

Message:  God’s word is vital to the life-cycle of the spirit. God gives His word, and His word becomes hope and life to all who will hear it with their heart. Let God’s word settle into your heart and grow so that your faith will abound.

Affirmation:  God's word is food for my soul. As I take in His word my soul is nourished and my faith grows.

Reflection:  Can you see how God's word is to our soul what water is to the earth? If you haven't already done it begin a plan of Bible reading which will encourage you in the faith.
