Sleep In Peace And Confidence
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. - Psalm 4:8
When I was a child we were very conscious of the threat of
nuclear war, although at the time we called it “atomic war.” At school we would practice getting under our desks for protection and the teachers would tell us to close our eyes so the blast wouldn’t blind us.
There was a lot of fear in those days, but nowhere was that more evident than in my home. I would go to bed at night and be awakened by my mother who had heard sirens going off. She would make me get up and get fully dressed so we would be ready to flee to the mountains when the bombs began to fall.
David had gone through many fearful times in his life, but he
had learned that there was a place where he could dwell in safety. He knew that the devices of this world could offer very little in real security and his only hope was in his Lord.
If we are to be able to lay our head on our pillow at night and feel at peace and safe, we too must learn to trust in the Lord. The only sure hope for a secure future is in Jesus Christ our Lord.
The cold war of the 50’s and 60’s is long over, but we still face many challenges today. With all of that we can still sleep in peace because we know that the Lord will keep us safe.
It is God's love for us that draws him to keep us safe as we put our trust in him.
Prayer: Lord, I know that there is no security in this world and my only hope for peace and safety is in Christ Jesus. Thank you for being there. Amen.
