Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. - James 2:15-17
Faith is not revealed by words but by actions. We all have faith and our actions reveal where we place our faith. James tells us that if we are extolling the virtues of our faith and our faith does not produce good works, then we have placed our faith in the wrong things.
Faith in Christ produces the Spirit of Christ in us. It is that Spirit that draws us to serve the needs of those around us. I am reminded of the time when Christ was ministering to people and when he looked around he saw the crowds. In his gospel Matthew wrote, “When he saw the crowds he was moved with compassion.”
When we truly have the Spirit of Christ working in us we will have compassion on others. The needs of others will get our attention and we will be drawn to serve them. Remember that our life speaks louder than our words.
What does your life say about your faith?
Prayer: I ask you Lord to give me the Spirit of Christ that I may see the crowds as he saw them. Give me a consciousness of the needs of people around me and give me a heart to serve others at their point of need. Amen.
