About Loving One Another
There is something very powerful being taught in this passage. It is not just about loving one another – it is about a level of commitment to Him and to others that could, at some point, require the ultimate sacrifice.
Jesus is telling us that the condition of His love remaining in us is that we are obedient to His commands just as He is obedient to the Father’s will. He is not ambiguous about what that means. In the next verse he says, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”
When we love Him as He has instructed we will put nothing above Him: not our desires, our fears, or our will. He is first above all else. Then he calls us to love one another in the same manner.
James poses the question of how we should love one another by asking, “Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, ‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his needs, what good is it?” (James 2:15-17)
We must surrender our will for the good of the other; we must sacrifice our desires to bless others. And yes, if need be, lay down our life for Him and others.
Prayer: Lord, I want to love as you have loved me, but I need your grace to love others as you have loved me. Grant me the ability to be others-centered not self-centered. In Jesus name. Amen.
Message: When we love Him as He has instructed we will put nothing above Him: not our desires, our fears, or our will. He is first above all else. Then he calls us to love one another in the same manner.
Affirmation: It is not always easy, in fact it is rarely easy, to love God and others above my own ambition and desires, but I am committed to that path.
Reflection: Jesus said, "If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love." Does that mean if we don't obey Him He will not love us? Or, does it mean that if we are in disobedience the blessings of his love will be withheld?
